In the pre-First World War Dual Monarchy of Austria Hungary, we follow Gustave Haan a famous composer to Trieste after he has left his wife, for Emma the new love of his life. They travel to the city on the Adriatic to avoid the scandal of their actions as well as hoping for a return of Gustave's creative urges.
